nooligans bookshelf:
one of my favorite spots in this world of ours…is your local used bookstore. you know that little on the corner with all the beat up ones displayed like a little league trophy, yes that one. i’m talking about the spot like in “the never-ending story” with the old man that is annoyed you walked in - I know they are harder and harder to come by - but when i come across one its my spot and time doesn’t exist and it just feels right.
when i’m wandering and i see something peeking out or catching my eye in the hidden dark corners of the shelves or the book pushed back just enough to stand out - i like to believe its the fates leading me down the path i need to go, like the books chose me.

by now must of you know i am a bit of a book junky - i consume about 1-3 books a week, from a very early age i discovered i was an auditory learner and for the most part its the only way i can retain the information, bit of a blessing and a curse.
but nooligan you have a bunch wordy books? yes that is true…and there is an app for that to convert my books to audio (that don’t have an audio version) - they are not my favorite but its gets the job done. i recommend: voice dream.
being an artist i also have huge collection of visual books - i think i grab things that look like it could spark something, inspire, use for future reference, etc. you never know right?
for the 1st episode of “nooligans bookshelf” i will be sharing a visual or wordy book and an audio book that i recommend from my personal collection.

visual / wordy:
Chicken: A Declaration of Love by Mateo Tranchellini, Moreno Monti
i first came across this brilliant photography book on kickstarter (which i didn’t pick up and it still makes me mad, that edition is better). the staging and beauty of a subject i had no interest in what-so-ever, but the production and passion in these photos made me care and still to this day i have no real need for it but i am proud i own it and highly recommend you do your eyes a favor and bless them with the beauty that is chicken.

audio:
Mythos By: Stephen Fry - Narrated by: Stephen Fry
its only fitting that i recommend the origins story of the greek gods we all know and love (if you don’t you better respect ‘em or we have problems) - i may have recommended this in a past episode but i can’t recommend a better re-telling. let me just say, you know that game where you have a list of living people you would love to have a conversation with…well stephen fry would be high on my list.
i grabbed this book when it first came out, i love greek mythos and i love stephen fry - no brainer. i can’t tell you enough - how in love i am with this version and re-telling (i believe this one is made for audio with mr. fry presenting in a way only he could), you just get lost and find yourself reliving or what feels like living for the first time the creation or birth of the reigning olympians gods.
if you want to learn or just enjoy some old fashion storytelling about in my opinion one of the greatest set of stories collected in all of mankind please check it out…and just to let you know this is book 1 of 3 starting here with mythos then book 2 heroes and finally ending with 3 troy. i can’t geek out enough about this collection, get your first edition now! ugh - i need a signed copy.
lastly, i believe these were created for a play and i have to see it like yesterday.
crummy thoughts:
Passions and desires fluctuate. We become enamored with people, art, a TV show, your rescue dog who has now displaced the garbage for the 13th time. The people, places and things we fancy, suddenly, don’t evoke the joy they once did. When groups develop this distaste or become intolerant, there is a growing propensity to publicly decry the indecencies. While certain taboos are acceptable, there is growing traction to dismantle that which we suddenly detest.
Cancel culture is pervasive in America. Disney is under fire because Snow White was unable to give consent when Prince Charming kisses her at the end of the story. I get it. We live in a society where men at all levels of the pseudo power structure disrespect women. Before I kissed my wife, I asked for permission. “Yeah it was weird. I laughed,” She reminisced as I asked her about it. “Sometimes, when a girl gives you the universal sign for kiss me, you can just kiss her.”
Some people read that situation all wrong though, and suddenly they are strapped with a restraining order and probably some criminal charges. #personalexperience… just kidding, but really though. Brock Turner is a case where the cancel community should be jumping in and outraged by the injustice. My personal experience is levels of high anxiety and fleeing when a female could even potentially suggest some type of guilt.
We get it right though too. As a society we have pivoted to respect people of other races and calling out the injustices we see. When 76% of the people in this country look like me, it’s the other 24% we need to develop awareness in respect their liberties. We are caring for BIPOC how we should have always. Personally I work to remove the ‘isms’ prevalent in our society. I want to respect people within the ethics of a prosperous culture.
Can we cancel sex trafficking, sexualizing youth, corrupt policy and the politicians who push them, predatory business practices, tax evasion, inflated and incentive health care system, how we handle mental health, ‘war on drugs’, hate, allowing others to perpetuate discrimination? We need to step up. There won’t be many eyes on this, but you can be aware of these pieces, and impact change.
Check out ep. 21 on cancel culture for more info. Be good to one another and contribute to an extraordinary culture.

thao’s tangent:
A light year is the distance light travels in one year. The speed of light is about 186,000 miles per second. Lightyear.fm takes these two facts and uses them to help demonstrate the sheer size of our universe. Be prepared to be amazed by how infinitesimal we are in comparison and get ready from some nostalgia several lightyears away.
Nobody wants to be a snitch...unless you're being offered a bargain. Prisoner's Dilemma is a famous problem in game theory, where you figure out whether or not snitching is the smart move. The evolution of trust is an online game that demonstrates this theory. Play and explore. In the end, will those stitches be worth it?
