visual / wordy (dust jacket):

Mental Jogging: 365 Games to Enjoy, to Stimulate the Imagination, to Increase Ability to Solve Problems and Puzzles by Reid J. Daitzman

this is an interesting one, it was recommended by dr. erickson.

( Milton H. Erickson is one of my personal favorite psychiatrists, extraordinary life story and interesting way of treating patients. )

its basically a form of exercise for your mind - what i find interesting by using it personally is that is creates a form of meditation when focusing on a daily game, it shifts your focus from the endless amount of work, anxiety, routines, etc. and lets you just focus on this single game even for just a moment.

its designed to increase your problem solving skills and creativity. also a great way to bring you out of your mental blocks.

  • example: six or more ways to avoid lightning and thunder?

  • dr erickson example: how many shades of green are in blades of grass?

there is no wrong or right answer these are just to upstart your mind like daily stretching in the morning.

unfortunately, this is one of the out of print books i had to track down, you can still find it but it tends to be a bit pricey. i would definitely put it on your list when you visit those ol’ corner bookstores.

audio (cloudy):

Barnum's Own Story: By: P. T. Barnum - Narrated by: David Colacci

tell me one person who hasn’t got a pretty amazing childhood memory from the magic that is the carnival, the sideshow, the circus, the fair. the feeling of circling through the ferris wheel while the fire works fill the night sky. the food that has a special place in your heart only when surrounded by all that wonder and excitement…you know you’re being hustled and you just don’t care not tonight, not tonight.

( ha, maybe its just me. i was born the very next morning after my parents spend the evening wandering around the enchanted spectacle that is the state fair here in sacramento. so it could be a bias opinion. )

but you can’t help but wonder where it all started and the man that took it and shaped it to become more than he could have ever imagined from Joice Heth the 161 year old nurse of George Washington, the worlds giant of man at the height of 3.4” General Tom Thumb, Jumbo the elephant that probably inspired disney’s own “dumbo” and giving the usa probably the very first “pop-star” in Jenny Lind. One of my person favorites stories of his personal bio was when he tried to trick a handful of native american chiefs to exhibit at his “American” museum and got more than he bargained for.

if ever someone was protected by the god hermes it would have been P.T. - though his life was full of magic and wonder it like the rest of us had its fair share of trails and he seemed to handle them in ways a lot of us would have just cut our losses and given up. i truly believe that giving up is the only time we lose.

i think the only criticism i have of his bio is that it was written by him - which paints him in a far better light than i could believed him to be, that being said i still loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone that has a love of theatrics, history and of course magic…plus to see that little man behind the curtain in the emerald city.

  • the narration was fantastic and gave a realistic feel to the time and place of his life and story

( and no i haven’t seen the hugh jackman film, i heard its pretty terrible in comparison to the man himself, but everyone is prettier in the film so there’s that. )

crummy thoughts:

Music is one of the most personal and preferential aspects of life. A specific song can string a moments memory throughout one’s lifetime. This means orchestrating a magical set requires understanding of how memories and emotions are experienced. The initial musical note, transitions, tempo and flow must be sharp throughout a set, throughout a playlist to induce euphoric moments for the listener and the DJ.

As musical mediums transform, people’s desire to immediately consume a specific song at an exact moment becomes the norm. Even listening to the that song repeatedly before moving to something else. No shade. To each their own. I can only swallow that if the person paying the balance is making the request, and even then I force smile and nod within reason.

Fortunately my track record for happy clients is impeccable, and my expectation for the event is elevated critically beyond my audience. I’m hyper-aware of the need for precision from start to finish and able to pivot on a dime. The goal is delivering a transcendent event leaving guests exclaiming it’s the best event they’ve ever experienced. The main ingredient is the music, and how it is woven throughout the allotted time.

Hermes Pirate Radio was birthed when Nooligan and I dreamt up live events. Once the world normalizes, we’ll be able to nourish your visual and auditory senses live and in person. Nu creating dynamically unique art and my dialing up hits to move your body.

Before our first live event, I asked Nu simply the vibe he was thinking. He simply said soul, James Brown. I took it from there, starting it with one of my favorite songs to begin a set: I Want You Back by The Jackson 5. I’ve organized the songs start to finish to flow and endure whether you throw on shuffle or listen through. Enjoy and always accepting feedback and ways to improve. Today we're dropping a chill instrumental mix, great for socializing, working or cleaning the gum off your shoes... cheers!

thao’s tangent:

It feels like just as we take a step towards returning to normal, we are being asked to take two steps back. It makes you question whether that long-awaited reunion with friends is alright. If you should be visiting family or going to cons. For those of you ready to move forward, but concerned about loved ones who are vulnerable, this may be a solution to help you during these uncertain times. Keep in mind that this is just for a bit of peace of mind. Be sure to still mask up and wash up.

This is self-explanatory. Use it to sign up for things and avoid spam. You're welcome.
